While it’s been a great winter for skiers and filling reservoirs, it has put a damper on driving trails. Several that were normally open year round got closed due to mud from all the runoff, such as Chinaman Gulch. But they are slowly starting to re-open.
However, many of the high trails will be opening a lot later than normal. One example is Twin Cone. While it is open, it would normally be close to being melted off enough to at least get near the top. But this year there is a load of snow still on it, by evidence of the last club trip. The second half of the big hill was still covered with many feet of snow, and it looked like much more further up. It probably won’t melt off for at least a month if not longer.
So if you plan on going on club trips, please keep your eye on the forum as trails may have to be changed around. I had tried scheduling around an increased snow load, but I really had no idea just how much the mountains were going to get, and they can still get more.
